The Journey
From the iconic red dunes of the Kalahari and the Fish River Canyon to the colonial coastline of Lüderitz and the towering dunes of Sossusvlei, this route captures the full drama of Namibia's south in eleven carefully paced days.
The drive itself is the safari. Namibia's gravel roads are some of the finest self-drive roads in Africa — wide, well-maintained, and utterly empty. Every turn reveals a new landscape, every stop a new silence.

01
Kalahari Desert
Day 1–3Your Namibia self-drive safari begins as you arrive and head into the iconic Kalahari Desert, where rolling red dunes and open savannah landscapes set the tone for your journey. Settle into Camelthorn Kalahari Lodge and ease into the rhythm of the desert.
Over the next two days, explore this vast reserve known for meerkats, oryx, springbok, and giraffe. Optional guided Bushman walks, quad biking, and nature drives are available. Evenings are best spent under endless African skies with classic sundowners and stargazing.
02
Fish River Canyon
Day 3–5Travel south to one of Namibia's most dramatic natural landmarks — the Fish River Canyon. The drive itself showcases remote desert scenery and wide open landscapes. Your base is Canyon Roadhouse, a charming lodge that celebrates the vintage auto era.
Spend your time at scenic viewpoints such as Hobas, visiting the nearby Ai-Ais hot springs, or on optional scenic flights and hiking trails into the canyon itself.
03
Lüderitz
Day 5–7Continue to the coastal town of Lüderitz, where German colonial charm meets the wild Atlantic coastline. The colourful buildings, Art Nouveau architecture, and ocean views create a unique atmosphere unlike anywhere else in Namibia. You stay at Alte Villa.
A highlight here is visiting Kolmanskop Ghost Town, where abandoned buildings are slowly being reclaimed by desert sand — extraordinary for photography and history lovers. Along the coast, spot flamingos, seals, and penguins.
04
Namib Desert
Day 7–8Your journey leads back inland into the vast Namib Desert — one of the oldest deserts in the world. This region offers raw, untouched landscapes with striking contrasts between dunes, mountains, and open plains. Tonight at At Kronenhof Lodge.
Enjoy a peaceful overnight stay surrounded by desert silence, with opportunities for stargazing, nature walks, and scenic drives through this remote and timeless environment.
05
Sossusvlei
Day 8–10Arrive in the world-famous Sossusvlei, home to Namibia's iconic red dunes and one of the country's top safari highlights. Early mornings are ideal for visiting Deadvlei, climbing Big Daddy, and capturing the dramatic desert light. Your base near Sesriem is Desert Homestead Lodge.
Optional activities include hot air balloon safaris at dawn, scenic flights over the dune sea, and guided excursions into the Namib-Naukluft Park. The combination of towering dunes, white clay pans, and endless desert views creates a truly unforgettable experience.
06
Windhoek
Day 10–11Return to Windhoek for your final evening. After days in remote wilderness, enjoy the comfort of the city with its mix of modern amenities, German-influenced culture, and excellent restaurants. Tonight at The Windhoek Luxury Suites.
The perfect time to unwind, reflect on your journey, and enjoy a final dinner. Recommended: Stellenbosch Wine Bar or Butcher's Block.
Namibia rewards those who drive slowly. The landscapes do not reveal themselves to the impatient.
